Always giving it our best shot
Phakamisa stands out from the pack because we go the extra mile and give our best in every project, no matter how small or big. One of our most central values is integrity, and we truly value employees with integrity who aim to always give of their best.
It’s in our favour to be self-motivated and hard-working because those who pursue excellence reap the rewards. When we are faithful to follow through on smaller tasks, we are entrusted with greater responsibility. People of integrity stand out from the crowd and are often granted well-deserved opportunities.
Valued team members are those who consistently put their best effort into their work. There is no ‘quick fix’ or shortcut that can prove a dependable worker. It takes perseverance to build up a practice of excellence in our work but in the end, our efforts will be fruitful.
Performing at our best is not a competition because each person’s ‘best’ effort looks different. We must be careful to assume that we have ‘arrived’ at the finish line, because pursuing a high standard is not an event – it involves continual improvement. We should also be wary of comparing ourselves to others, as this unhealthy habit is demotivating and saps our energy.
Rather, our best performance should be measured by our own consciences as this motivates a person to uphold integrity. It only takes a glance into the previous year to see how far we have come. Each day we learn and absorb new information that transforms and moulds us. Acknowledging our personal successes fuels us to go further.
For this reason, we shouldn’t be preoccupied with a ‘finish line’ mentality. Since we are constantly improving our ‘best’, the ‘finish line’ is extended further and further. For some, this can be frustrating if we don’t learn to celebrate our victories. Life is not made up of a series of finish lines that we can sprint towards. It’s a journey, and each day has wins to celebrate if you look with the right attitude.
We do our best work when we are in a positive state of mind. Maintaining an optimistic outlook on life changes how we approach our daily tasks and keeps us motivated. If we’re always focusing on our weaknesses, we lose sight of our worth. Instead, enhancing our strengths gives a confidence boost.
As we approach the end of 2021, let’s take a moment to see how far we’ve come. If you haven’t been giving your best lately, there’s still time to finish the year strong. Regroup and channel your energy into your strengths and you’ll be surprised at the quality of your output. In the words of H. Jackson Brown Jr., “If you’re doing your best, you won’t have any time to worry about failure.”
