At Phakamisa Hard Rock Mining, we embraced Women’s Month as an opportunity to highlight some of our hard-working and talented ladies. As a company, we prioritise empowering and investing in our people through mentorship, internship and academic programmes to see them grow and develop their careers.

One such employee, Nontlantla Nhleko, recalls that joining Phakamisa in 2018 “feels like yesterday”. Although she began as an office cleaner, Nontlantla saw room to grow and she grasped these opportunities with determination to excel.

Now, Nontlantla enjoys her career in administration and finds satisfaction in the work that she does. While Nontlantla admits she never imagined that she would get where she is now, it’s clear that her hard work and enthusiasm paid off.

“I didn’t get where I am today alone. I had a great mentor at Phakamisa who instilled drive into me and encouraged me to reach for my goals. Soon, I had aspirations to be more than just an employee but rather an asset to the company,” said Nontlantla.

“I believe that my expertise is greatly appreciated within the company and I’m confident that I’ll go on to learn more and expand my skillset in time.”

Eva Mabasa, now an administration clerk, describes her journey with Phakamisa as fulfilling. Having joined as a transport controller in March 2018, Eva wholeheartedly accepted every promotion with a willingness to learn and ambition to succeed.

“After my initial contract ended, I was surprised but so privileged to be appointed as an office assistant. To know that my employers trusted me and thought I was capable helped me to believe in myself,” Eva said.

Eva’s self-confidence continued to grow as she received praise for her work and furthered her academic studies. Being surrounded by uplifting colleagues, Eva recounts that her office environment became a place she could call home and her co-workers became family.

Working alongside diverse people, Eva appreciates the respect individuals have for one another. The uniting factor among both staff and employers is our common goal to achieve excellence in every aspect of the business.

“There is not a single day that I regret working here. Phakamisa gave me opportunities I never thought would be possible. I believe I can achieve anything with this support system backing me.”
